U. S. Forest Service Project: Trout Lake Portage Maintenance Conservationists with Common Sense (CWCS) would like to make a few comments on the proposed maintenance of Trout Lake Portage from Lake Vermilion to Trout Lake. Back in 2001, former CWCS President Guy Holmes spent many hours talking to U. S. Forest Service personnel about the proposed maintenance plans. CWCS's greatest concern is that both turn-arounds (on the Lake Vermilion side and the Trout Lake side) retain the ability for the use of trucks. Presently, Jim Zak, the cooperator of Trout Lake Portage has chosen the use of 4-wheelers in transporting boats and canoes across the portage. CWCS feels the option must be left open for the use of trucks, in the event Zak no longer decides to operate the portage service. CWCS asks that truck use be of top concern in the Trout Lake Portage maintenance, which will lessen the area of the two turn-arounds. Sincerely,
Nancy McReady |
